Meet The BOSS
- The Story of Billy
On a hot summer day (June 27th, 2021) my wife, Deyse, was returning from lunch when she noticed a little chihuahua wandering next to our building. She didn't pay much attention as there are other cats and dogs in the area, but the next day the dog was still there and was looking tired and sick. She began to ask neighbors if they were missing a dog, but had no luck finding its owner. By the third day, the dog was in an open box laying in the dumpster and looked like he might not survive much longer. Being a dog lover she took him in, gave him some milk, and kept him warm.
His fur was matted, his eyes were sunk in, he had long nails, tartar on his teeth, and could barely walk or bark. After two weeks of intensive nurturing, the dog began to improve. Deyse and I were totally in love with our little recue and decided to name him Billy. Though a strange name for a dog, we had a long-standing joke in our family about a person named Billy, so the name gave us joy.
Did Someone Say Billy?
When it came time to give Billy his first vet exam, the vet came out of her office and said she could not return Billy to us. By law, Billy had been chipped and she had to return him to his registered owner. The vet called the number on the chip and a young girl by the name of Yridian Cardenas came to pick up Billy right away. Yridian called out his original name, Chiwis, but Billy would not respond. He stayed glued to Deyse and did not want to go with the girl, but she grabbed him from Deyse. Before departing, we were able to get her phone number. It's a good thing that we did, because Deyse was crying for several days at how much she missed Billy and was concerned for him as we had just nursed him back to health.
I contacted Yridian to see if I could drop off some of his toys and food. She agreed, and when I saw her I could tell she had her hands full. She had 3 dogs and 2 cats and Billy was not getting along with the other dogs. She also had a young toddler and I could tell that she had a hard time managing all of the animals and her child. She said Billy had not eaten for the last 3 days and was getting worried.
Over the next few days, we kept in touch. Billy still had not been eating. Deyse and I were very concerned and attempted to buy him from her. She was not willing to sell him to us and informed us that Billy was a gift to her husband by his mother, and was his favorite pet. They had been searching for him for over a year and were not willing to part with him. We then offered her $600 for him, to which she simply laughed at the low-ball offer, but offered to sell one of her other dogs that did not like Billy.
I kept going back to the home every few days to take treats for Billy and to see if they had changed their minds. I got the feeling that her husband worked long hours doing hard work and with the right offer they might be willing to part with Billy. So one day I stopped at the bank and picked up $1,500. I offered the money and counted the bills in front of her on her dining table. She and her husband discussed the offer and decided they would be willing to part with him for $2,000. I rushed to the bank to get the rest of the cash. She handed a little piece of paper to indicate that she had sold the dog to us for $2,000 and put her name and phone number on it. I grabbed Billy, and rushed out the door before she changed her mind. I then took Billy to work to surprise Deyse. He jumped on her and could not stop licking and leaning into her. They have been inseparable ever since.
Who's The BOSS?
In the months that followed, we moved to New York and treated Billy like royalty. He walks daily in Central Park and sports stylish clothes for every occasion. He even vacations with us to Florida as part of our family and loves to chase crabs on the beach. There is an incredible bond that has formed with us and we can't imagine life without him. We send photos of Billy's exciting advetures to his original family. They are happy that he has found such a loving home, and do not regret letting us adopt him.
Fast forward to today and we have built this site for Billy. It just goes to show how life can turn on a dime. One day you are dying near a dumpster and the next you are eating salmon for lunch and traveling the world. Woof: from underdog to BOSS. 😀
